Apple Spice Café & Juice Bar in Shrewsbury has joined the WooFood Family with their flavorful and healthful blended fruit and vegetable drinks. Two of the popular WooFood certified beverages are the “Squashed Mango” and the “Veggie Patch” from the Veggie Fusion menu . The Squashed Mango is a bright combination of butternut squash, mangoes, banana and beets all blended together with oranges, celery, spinach, parsley, lettuce and watercress. As the menu says, drink to your health with this flavorful blend. Apple Spice says it well with their detailed description of the Veggie Patch blend: “crushed pineapple, nutrient dense and enzymatically alive spinach and kale, avocado, banana, 20g of vanilla whey protein and real lemon.”
The word “blend” is key to the Apple Spice drinks. Zach Demma, a student at UMass Med and WooFood Board member, worked with Apple Spice on the WooFood certification process and researched the benefits of blending versus juicing. Zach shared the following explanation with us: The benefit of blending over juicing is that the whole fruit/vegetable is used. Therefore phytonutrients from the fruits/vegetables skin and seeds as well as their fiber content are included in the final product. With juicing the fiber and phytonutrients from the skin are extracted in the juicing process. Fiber is beneficial to health, but another role it plays in a blended drink is that is slows the body's absorption of sugar and helps you feel more full. Thus, with blending you get less of the sugar high/blood glucose spike than you get with juicing and it also makes you feel fuller. You are likely to get hungry again sooner with juicing and end up consuming more calories per day. It is also easier to consume higher volumes of juice, which means you can end up taking in so much sugar and so many calories that it outweighs the benefits of the healthy nutrients.
This is some compelling evidence of why blending is a healthful choice. Make a point of refreshing yourself with a Veggie Fusion blend from Apple Spice in Shrewsbury.
